There are some celebrities who will only lend their name to a product to make a profit. Adam Levine claims he’s not one of those celebrities, although he doesn’t mind the whole profit part.

“I will not sit here and tell you that I don’t love to make money because I do love to make money,” Levine told me during an interview at The Mercer Hotel in New York. “However, that’s not the only reason why I’m doing a lot of these things.”

The Maroon 5 lead singer was essentially referencing the launch of his new fragrance. This is the same man who told his Twitter followers back in March of 2011 that from that point forward, celebrity fragrances should be “punishable by death.” Now almost two years later, Levine talked about his change of heart.

“You can just hate something, which is one way of dealing with it, or you can take an opportunity that falls in to your lap, and use it to make something good,” he explained. “It doesn’t really matter what you like to do or how your interests develop over time. It’s just whether or not it satisfies you and whether or not you put the time, the effort, the care, the passion, and the artistry in to it enough to make it really good.”

Levine has adopted this attitude in all facets of his career: from his time as a coach on NBC’s “The Voice” to Maroon 5’s latest album Overexposed, and the current tour he’s on to support it.

“It’s just one of those things (where) you roll with the punches and kind of go with the flow,” said Levine of how he’s handling his new schedule. “You have to match the energy of the moment.”

That isn’t always easy for the singer.

“It’s not as tough when were on the road, actually,” Levine explained. “Once you’re on the road, you have a singular purpose: you want the show to be really great, and that’s your job. When you get home and you’re not on tour, then all of the other peripheral things start to kind of take over.”

The other factor that at the very least is a small thought in Levine’s mind: he isn’t getting any younger. The artist turns 34 this March.

“I thought about that today, I was like ‘Sh*t, I’m gonna be 34 or 35, how old am I?’” Levine admitted. “Still the right side of 30! Hanging on for another year.”
